Be the Church

Be the Church is an opportunity to live out our faith through service. While in the past, this event has taken place on a single Sunday, this year we are providing multiple opportunities throughout the Lenten season to be the hands and feet of Christ in our community.

Saturday, March 9

Time: 8am-3pm

Where: A Pearland resident. Address will be provided after registration.

What: Build a wheelchair ramp for a resident in our community.

Max # of volunteers: 14

Minimum age: Under 16 needs to be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

 

Saturday, March 16

Time: 10am–4:30pm

Where: 3765 N. Loop 336 East, Conroe, TX 77301

What: Assembling/quality-checking UMCOR relief kits

Max # of volunteers: 50

 

Saturday, March 23

Time: 8-11am (arrive between 7:30-7:45am for orientation)

Where: 535 Port Wall St., Houston, TX 77029

What: Sort & pack donations at Houston Food Bank's Portwall Warehouse.

Max # of volunteers: 300

Minimum age: 6. Minors under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

***Note: prior online registration (one per family) on HFB’s website is required. A waiver for each person is also required. You can submit it online prior to the event, or may bring the printed waivers in person on the day of the event. Closed toed shoes required.***

Time: 9am-3pm

Where: 3309 Industrial Dr., Pearland, TX 77581

What: Painting walls in rooms and hallways at Forgotten Angels’s Dayhab Center.

Max # of volunteers: 20

Minimum age: 12; anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian

 

Saturday, March 30 

Time: Noon-3pm

Where: 3402 Swensen Rd., Pearland, TX 77581

What: A deep cleaning (sterilize floors, clean their cooler, landscaping, powerwashing, etc.) at Christian Helping Hands.

Max #: 20

Minimum age: 12

 

Saturday, April 6

Time: 1-4pm

Where: First United Methodist Church Pearland MFC

What: Building bed frames to go to a foster child/family and decorating beddings

Max # of volunteers: 75

 

Saturday, April 13

Time: 9:30am–3:30pm (lunch provided)

Where: 3507 Linkwood Dr., Houston, TX 77025

What: painting, landscaping, repairing a fence, and repairing a tree bench at Bethany Methodist Weekday School.

Max # of volunteers: 100

 

 

Our sister campus, First United Methodist Church of Pearland, is offering additional events for which you are also welcome to register.  

 

Sunday, March 10

Time: 12:30-3:30pm

Where: 638 Harbor Dr., Liverpool, TX 77577

What: Repair bikes, and have a bbq and hang out with the children who are residing at Kidz Harbor.

Max # of volunteers: 30

 

Monday, March 11

Time: 9:30am - 3:30pm

Where: A Houston resident affected by Hurricane Harvey. Will provide address after you register.

What: moving boxes, hanging drywall, painting, landscaping, etc.

Max # of volunteers: 20

Minimum age: 14; volunteers under 18 must have adult supervision.

***Every adult volunteer 18 years and older must complete safe sanctuary training and complete a background check if they have not done so already. All must have a signed waiver.***

Time: 9am-noon

Where: 5393 Wilson Ave., Alvin, TX 77511

What: Plant tomatoes & work on a greenhouse with Builders without Borders.

What: Prepare and serve dinner for 10 young adults from AmeriCorps working on Harvey rebuild and staying at Builders without Borders.

 

Sunday, March 17

Time: 9:30–11am

Where: FUMC Pearland, B210 with New Life Sunday School

What: Learn about how Have Shears Will Travel, a hairdressing ministry, is impacting lives all over Houston one cut at a time and tour their mobile hair salon. The salon will be parked at Pearland State Bank. All are welcome!

What: bagging rice & beans; eyeglass ministry; nursery with Builders without Borders.

Where: FUMC Pearland, MFC

What: Prepare and serve dinner for 10 young adults from AmeriCorps working on Harvey rebuild and staying at Builders without Borders.

Where: Off Knapp & Old Alvin. Will provide address after registration.

What: Hang dry wall in the garage of a person affected by Hurricane Harvey.

What: Viewing a video about a child’s journey through the foster system.

What: Sewing prayer flags, praying for the children in the foster system and potential foster families, and learning how to make weighted blankets.

What: A fun atmosphere to celebrate previous week while also bringing awareness to foster/adoptive families. We will also assemble 1st night backpacks at this time with the items we will have collected throughout the previous weeks.
